Government Extends Deadline for Dominica’s E-Passport
Dominica set a new timeline for the transition from a machine readable to an e-passport. Government has extended the new period to December, 31 2022.
The timeline was set for two years since Government launched the new biometric passport back in July 2021.
The migration period was then revised earlier this year with a deadline of six months which would have been the end of August 2022. The initial change was required as Government through the Ministry of National Security and Home Affairs committed to elevating Dominica’s standard in keeping with the rest of the world.
“That was important in order to ensure a robust and more secure passport and that remains part of Dominica’s goals going forward. This would lead to improved secure processes and building of resilience on all levels. Accordingly the transition period was set to end on the 31st of August 2022. I must add therefore, notwithstanding the continued need to migrate to the new e-passport as soon as possible, it is also important to ensure that Dominica is compliant with international standards,” Hon. Blackmoore stated.
The Minister explained that the need to quickly transition to an e-passport is not a thing of the past as it is still necessary. He noted that Government will continue to respond to the needs of the people.
“Having considered the number of issues and being mindful of the challenges which we all must be aware of as well as the many requests from the public who have been applying for the new e-passport, and you have been asking for an extension of the date, for the transitioning from the machine readable passport to the new e-passport, it is therefore important that your Government gives you consideration for an extension,” Minister Blackmoore noted.
E-passports have already been issued to both parts of Saint Maarten, St. Thomas St. Croix and St. John through the mobile kit initiative. Minister Blackmoore noted that the process has been smooth sailing so far adding that he is satisfied with the cooperation received from those abroad.
“I must report to you the people of Dominica that this was met with tremendous support and enthusiasm. Two hundred and ninety passports applications were processed for Saint Maarteen; a hundred and ninety-one passport applications were processed for St. Thomas and a hundred and sixty-one passport applications were processed for St. Croix and St. John. Therefore a total of five hundred and ninety-seven passport applications were processed on those islands. The tremendous success of this venture is owning to the hard working police officers who traveled to these islands and the tremendous outpouring of support from Dominicans resident in those islands,” the Minister explained.
As of Tuesday, July 05 2022, the total number of e-passports printed and issued is thirty-one thousand three hundred and forty-seven. The Ministry of National Security and Home Affairs will continue to keep the public informed on the progress to the e-passport transition.
“We take the opportunity therefore to commend the coordinator, Ms. Valda Powell, Inspector St. Rose and his staff for their hard work thus far. They have been working day and night to see us through this transition period. We promise to continue to interface with you the public as we move forward as one people to transition to our new electronic passport and we will seek to make your efforts and transition as smooth as possible,” Minister Blackmoore further added.
